From Below brings together members from North Carolina’s political hardcore band Catharsis—Matt (guitar) and Ernie (bass), São Paulo’s vegan straight edge veterans Point of No Return—Fred (vocals), and North Carolina’s forlorn post-punk act Bellafea—Nathan (drums). The result of this unlikely combination is nothing like what you might expect: raw and fast d-beat seasoned hardcore punk influenced by the likes of Discharge, Corrosion of Conformity, Crumbsuckers, Christian Death, Cro-Mags, Wolfbrigade, and Disfear. Their debut EP features three songs recorded in the fall of 2024. “Teratomachia,” the single, is a fast-paced metallic hardcore avalanche that addresses nuclear war. Instead of focusing on the looming threat of future devastation, it looks to the past—specifically, the actual nuclear attacks in history and the trauma they caused. The “monsters” in the song, which also gives the EP its name, refer both to the cultural tropes used to make sense of collective trauma and to the men who authorized such attacks, driven by an abhorrent and self-serving utilitarian rationale. The EP includes two other tracks. “Empire’s Deceit” combines classic d-beat elements with moody post-punk interludes as it explores the seemingly contradictory yet intrinsically linked relationship between imperialism abroad and xenophobia at home—an attitude that defines much of the political right today. “Feitoria,” sung in Portuguese, brings to the fore the legacy of centuries of colonialism, particularly of the Iberian kind, in the Americas and Africa.

"FROM BELOW’s debut EP, The Deeds of Monsters, is a reckoning. The North Carolina-based outfit—Matt (guitar), Ernie (bass), Nathan (drums), and Fred (vocals)—brings together decades of experience in underground music, with members who’ve cut their teeth in bands like CATHARSIS and POINT OF NO RETURN. But this isn’t a nostalgic rehash of past lives. It’s a different beast altogether." - Idioteq

Recorded at Scenic Lab between November and December 2024, mixed by Kevin Chipman, and mastered by Scott Crouse at Formvaudio Studio in January 2025, The Deeds of Monsters is as calculated as it is visceral. The artwork, crafted by Brazilian artist Luciano Feijão, is a nightmarish snapshot—feral teeth, raw aggression, an image that gnaws at the mind before the music even starts.
